OpenStack Foundation has received massive positivity through its ninth user survey. The latest report shows a 44 percent growth in OpenStack deployments in 2017.

With the participation of 754 unique organisations, the user survey had gained 22 percent more inputs than a year ago. The survey was conducted in 476 cities around 78 countries and includes inputs from more than 1,300 users.

According to the survey results, the average age of a deployment is 1.68 years, and one deployment typically consists of nine projects. The results also point towards 32 percent of users who have 10,000 or more employees, while 25 percent have less than 25 employees. Further, 16 percent of deployments are reported to have more than a petabyte of object storage.

Interest towards orchestrating apps

Among the entire survey base, 47 percent of users are using containers to orchestrate apps with Kubernetes, whereas 65 percent are running OpenStack services within their containers using Docker.

The foundation has reported that the median user site runs 61 to 80 percent of their overall infrastructure on OpenStack. Moreover, at the installations with the cloud computing solutions of over 1,000 crores, the median user runs 81 to 100 percent of their entire infrastructure on OpenStack.

The survey logged responses from 583 deployments between January 26 and March 1. The revealed data is fairly impressive considering Intel’s recent decision to discontinue support towards OpenStack Innovation Center that was announced in a joint venture with Rackspace back in June 2015.
