Open source group “Veteran Unix Admins” has finally shipped Devuan 1.0.0 as the first Debian fork without systemd. The open source project was originally announced back in November 2014.

Debuted in April 2015, Debian 8 (Jessie) operating system was the first release its family with systemd as the default init replacement. That development disappointed some early Debian users but brought a reason for the Devuan team to abandon the systemd adoption and support the traditional init system.

The engineers took more than two years in developing Devuan version 1.0. As a result, the release emerges as a stable, secure and reliable Linux/GNU operating system — along with a systemd-free experience.

Devuan 1.0.0 comes preloaded with Xfce 4.10 desktop environment. The defaulted environment has a dock on the bottom and a panel on the top interface. Further, the platform includes the packages from some older Debian Jessie branches and includes Linux kernel 3.16.43 LTS.

New LibreOffice and Firefox versions

The first stable release features LibreOffice 4.3.3 office suite and is shipped with Mozilla Firefox 45.9.0 ESR browser. Besides, there is support for both 64-bit and 32-bit hardware architectures.

You can download Devuan 1.0.0 from its official website. Apart from the desktop version, you can install Devuan on devices such as Raspberry Pi, Raspberry Pi 2, Raspberry Pi 3 and  Chromebooks using embedded images.
