Open source helps organisations lower upfront investment and leads to faster innovation

Digital transformation and economic crises are pushing business organisations to embrace open source technology, according to Damien Wong, vice-president and general manager for Asian growth and emerging markets of Red Hat Inc.

He said that business organisations are adopting open source software to lower their operating costs and become more scalable, enabling digital transformation, Bangkok Post reported.

Considering the stagnant global economy, companies are also adopting a wait-and-see approach to technology spending, he said.

Open source helps organisations lower upfront investment and leads to faster innovation, he explained.

He further noted that business organisations need to have an open mind and culture to embrace changes and unlock potential, as there will always be danger and opportunity in crises.

Need for digital transformation

Meanwhile, Margaret Dawson, head of global product marketing for Red Hat, pointed out the results of a survey titled “Global Customer Tech Outlook” that covered over 400 Red Hat customers in 51 countries.

The survey found that digital transformation is a must because of demand from new business models and product services.

However, Dawson said that transformation can be difficult because the chief information officer is required to be a digital strategist.
