Proxmox Server Solutions GmbH, a provider of open-source server software, on Thursday announced the availability of Proxmox VE 5.4, the new version of its open-source platform for enterprise virtualization.

Enterprises use open Proxmox solutions to deploy efficient, agile and simplified IT infrastructures, minimize total cost of ownership, and avoid vendor lock-in.

The open-source project Proxmox VE was first released in April 2008. Today it has a huge worldwide user base with over 250,000 hosts. More than 40,000 members are active in the community support forum.

Built on Debian Stretch 9.8 and a specially modified Linux Kernel 4.15, the Proxmox VE 5.4 introduces a new wizard for installing Ceph storage via the user interface, and brings enhanced flexibility with HA clustering, hibernation support for virtual machines and support for Universal Second Factor (U2F) authentication.

Key features

The new features of Proxmox VE 5.4 focus on usability and simple management of the software-defined infrastructure as well as on security management. These include –

  • Installing Ceph via user interface with the new wizard
  • Greater Flexibility with High Availability improvements

  • Support for U2F Authentication
  • Improved ISO installation wizard

By using Proxmox VE 5.4 as an open-source alternative to proprietary virtualization management solutions, enterprises would be able to centralize and modernize their infrastructure and turn it into a future-proof software-defined data center.
