Wind River Systems has announced the launch of its Kubernetes-based cloud platform which aims to meet the needs of an edge cloud infrastructure that support 5G, IoT, or multi access edge computing (MEC) applications. The company said that with the Wind River Systems Cloud Platform, service providers will be able to experience the benefits of a cloud-native and containerised architecture. This would give the providers the ability to manage geographically separated Virtualized radio access network (vRAN) infrastructures.

Multiple architectures combined

The company said that the technology in the platform uses the concept of a Single Pane of Glass (SPoG). This allows a service provider to sit in front of a single computer screen and manage an entire distributed network. It also said that it has combined multiple architectures (cloud, Kubernetes, and containers) to produce a 5G-virtual radio access network. The use of common virtualisation architecture will allow all elements (far edge, near edge, local, and central) to be solved with a single approach claims the company claims Wind River Systems.

As per the company, the cloud platform will also provide scaling solutions for network handling from a single compute node at the network edge to thousands of nodes. The remote nodes will be able to survive disconnection and will not only automatically reconnect but resynchronize with the cloud.
