ZSvirt is released under GPL 3.0, with its source code, installation images and core enterprise virtualisation features available for production use without licensing fees.
ZStack has open-sourced ZSvirt, an enterprise virtualisation platform derived from its commercial ZSphere platform. The community edition provides compute, storage and network virtualisation, along with high availability, disaster recovery, snapshots, backup, APIs and software development kits. ZStack says the open-source edition matches the commercial platform in features and scale without licensing restrictions on production use.
ZSvirt is released under the GNU General Public License version 3.0 (GPL 3.0), allowing users to use, modify and distribute the source code under the licence terms. It provides more than 2,000 asynchronous RESTful/OpenAPI endpoints, along with Go, Python and Java SDKs for integration with Kubernetes, PaaS layers and internal platforms. A native Terraform provider is also supported.
ZSvirt supports more than 10,000 hosts under a single control plane and up to 768 virtual CPUs per virtual machine. Its networking features include SR-IOV acceleration, distributed switches, port groups and SR-IOV live migration. Security features include Secure Boot, virtual Trusted Platform Module support, microsegmentation, multi-factor authentication and immutable audit logs.
The open-source release also includes migration capabilities through the ZMigrate toolset. ZMigrate supports agentless, agent-based and cold migration, using full-disk block migration and background incremental synchronisation. It supports up to 50 concurrent virtual machine migrations and works with mainstream hypervisors, KVM and physical-to-virtual migration. Online migration has a volume limit, while offline virtual machine import is unrestricted.
ZSvirt v1.0.0 is available with its source code and installation images through public project repositories. Developers can build the software from source, report bugs through pull requests and participate in project discussions. ZStack also plans to make the roadmap, contribution guidelines and governance rules publicly accessible.
