LF India will support developers, startups and enterprises with open-source collaboration, training and regional programmes across AI, cloud-native, telecom and other technologies.
The Linux Foundation has launched LF India, a regional initiative aimed at expanding open-source collaboration across India’s rapidly growing technology ecosystem. The new organisation is designed to support developers, startups, enterprises, government bodies and intergovernmental organisations while strengthening India’s role in building open-source technologies with global impact.
India already has nearly 200,000 developers contributing to Linux Foundation projects, and the organisation expects the country’s developer community to become the world’s largest by 2028. LF India will build on this momentum by providing open-source training, local meetups, technical events and incubation support for new projects, with the goal of encouraging more developers to move from simply using open-source software to actively contributing to it.
The initiative will initially focus on technologies including cloud-native computing, telecommunications, edge and IoT, blockchain, cybersecurity and domain-specific AI. Rather than concentrating on a single technology area, LF India is intended to serve as a regional hub where communities and organisations can collaborate on projects that support critical digital infrastructure across multiple industries.
The launch also strengthens the Linux Foundation’s broader presence in India through regional events and partnerships. The announcement coincided with the inaugural KubeCon + CloudNativeCon India in New Delhi, while future events including Open Source Summit India and the next KubeCon + CloudNativeCon India are planned to further expand developer participation and technical collaboration.
Industry organisations have also backed the initiative through collaborations covering areas such as cloud-native computing, open networking, blockchain, software security and developer education. By creating a dedicated regional organisation, the Linux Foundation aims to provide long-term support for India’s open-source ecosystem while helping local innovation contribute to global software, hardware and AI projects.
