With Code Llama, Meta takes a leap into AI-powered programming support. As the coding landscape evolves, will this be your new coding ally?

Meta Platforms, previously known as Facebook, has unveiled its latest offering – ‘Code Llama.’ This groundbreaking AI model, tailored for programming, aims to support software engineers in diverse sectors. Unlike its predecessors, Code Llama boasts a specialised focus and open-source accessibility.

In direct competition with OpenAI’s Codex and Microsoft’s Github Copilot, Code Llama enters the programming assistance arena. Meta’s blog post states that it’s designed to “generate code, complete code, create developer notes and documentation, be used for debugging, and more.” The languages it supports include Python, C++, Java, PHP, Typescript (JavaScript), C#, and Bash.

Code Llama joins the LLaMA 2 family, which encompasses a 7-billion, a 13-billion, and a 34-billion parameter model, each trained on 500 billion tokens. These models are tailored to work efficiently, even on fewer GPUs. The smaller models offer a practical advantage amidst ongoing GPU scarcity.

With an allowance of up to 100,000 tokens for prompts, Code Llama enables users to provide more extensive context from their codebases, yielding relevant results. Notably, Meta offers two fine-tuned models – one for Python and another for Instruct. The latter is geared for generating safe and expected code responses from natural language inputs.

As Meta pioneers AI-powered programming support, Code Llama holds the potential to redefine software engineering practices. This advancement promises enhanced productivity and innovation for developers across various domains. The industry awaits practical applications of Code Llama’s capabilities, anticipating how it will impact the landscape of coding and development.
