At Universe 2025, GitHub unveiled Agent HQ , an open, platform-agnostic architecture empowering developers to control multiple AI coding agents from rivals like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google in one interface.
GitHub has reaffirmed its open source DNA at Universe 2025 in San Francisco, unveiling Agent HQ, a new architecture that allows developers to manage multiple AI coding agents from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Cognition, and xAI through a single “mission control” interface. This marks a pivotal step in transforming GitHub into a unified control plane for AI-assisted software development, extending its tradition of openness into the AI era.
“GitHub has always done what it does best, fixing developer pain around how developers build, while still allowing you to choose how you want to build,” said Kyle Daigle, Chief Operating Officer, GitHub, underscoring the platform’s enduring focus on developer autonomy and choice.
Third-party AI agents will roll out to GitHub Copilot subscribers in the coming months, with Copilot Pro+ users gaining early access to OpenAI Codex in VS Code Insiders this week. The move positions GitHub as a real-time AI “command center”, enabling developers to control and monitor multiple agents simultaneously.
Acquired by Microsoft in 2018 for $7.5 billion, GitHub remains central to Microsoft’s AI ambitions. Satya Nadella had stated that the deal would “strengthen our commitment to developer freedom, openness, and innovation.”
With over 180 million developers and adoption by 90% of Fortune 100 companies, GitHub continues to define the open source frontier, now expanding it to include AI-driven software creation where flexibility, collaboration, and interoperability lead the way.
