Linux Foundation Launches React Foundation With Industry Giants On Board

The Linux Foundation will host the newly formed React Foundation, ensuring React and React Native transition from Meta’s stewardship to a neutral, community-led open source model supported by industry giants like Amazon, Microsoft, and Vercel.

At React Conf 2025 in Henderson, Nevada, the Linux Foundation announced plans to launch the React Foundation, a new open source body that will serve as the neutral home for React, React Native, and related projects. The initiative aims to ensure these widely used frameworks remain open, community-led, and innovation-driven while advancing global collaboration in front-end development.

React, created and open sourced by Meta, is now moving under the Linux Foundation’s governance, marking what industry leaders are calling a major milestone in the evolution of open source software. “The move to a neutral home is the natural next step in the evolution of this important open source technology to ensure React and React Native remain open, innovative and community led,” said Jim Zemlin, Executive Director of the Linux Foundation.

Founding members of the React Foundation include Amazon, Callstack, Expo, Meta, Microsoft, Software Mansion, and Vercel. Seth Webster, Head of React at Meta, will serve as the Foundation’s Executive Director. The Foundation will manage governance, infrastructure, and community programmes, including organising React Conf events worldwide.

React currently powers nearly 55 million websites, with React Native downloaded over 4 million times weekly. “We open sourced React 12 years ago and since then the community has made it an essential part of how our industry ships better products,” said Andrew “Boz” Bosworth, CTO and Head of Reality Labs at Meta.

The move places React alongside other major open source technologies such as Linux, Kubernetes, and Node.js, signifying its maturity into a global, community-governed ecosystem.
