OpenAI’s new Sora app and Sora 2 let users freely explore AI-generated videos, combining creative experimentation with parental safety features.
OpenAI has launched the Sora app alongside Sora 2, its advanced audio and video generator replacing last year’s original Sora. The social platform allows users to create AI-generated videos of themselves and friends, shared via an algorithmic feed similar to TikTok.
The iOS app is currently available in the United States and Canada, with the Sora 2 Pro model accessible to ChatGPT Pro subscribers for testing. While the social network is invite-only for now, OpenAI plans a global rollout in the near future.
A standout feature, ‘Cameos,’ lets users upload a one-time video and voice clip to create AI-generated content featuring their likeness. These clips can be shared with friends who may also incorporate the user into their own videos.
Sora personalises content based on user activity, location, past interactions, and ChatGPT chat history, though these algorithmic suggestions can be disabled.
Parental controls via ChatGPT allow parents to set infinite scroll limits, disable personalisation, and control who can send direct messages to their children.
The app will be free at launch, with OpenAI planning to monetise by charging for additional videos during peak demand. Users retain the ability to withdraw permission for their likeness, addressing safety concerns around misleading or non-consensual AI-generated content.
OpenAI’s Sora encourages open experimentation in AI-driven media, offering developers and hobbyists a platform to explore AI video creation while balancing safety, moderation, and ethical considerations.
With competitors like Meta launching their own AI video feed, Sora positions itself as a freely accessible, open-source-focused platform, fostering innovation in AI-generated social media content.
