Spacelift unveils Intent, an open source model letting developers provision cloud resources using natural language, combining speed, governance, and auditability for non-critical workloads.
Spacelift announced Spacelift Intent, the first codeless, AI-driven infrastructure provisioning model that allows developers to spin up cloud resources using plain-language prompts, no HCL or Terraform coding required. Fully open source and available on GitHub, Intent translates developer requests directly into provider API calls, enabling rapid experimentation while maintaining governance and audit trails.
Built on existing Terraform providers, Intent ensures that “if it works in Terraform, it works in Intent,” offering a free, open path for developers to prototype infrastructure without compromising enterprise controls. Ideal for non-critical workloads such as prototypes, tests, and hackathon projects, Intent complements traditional Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) and GitOps workflows, which remain essential for mission-critical systems.
Key features include natural language provisioning via Model Context Protocol (MCP), governance by default through Spacelift’s policy engine and audit trails, instant provisioning, and the ability to promote any resource into full Terraform/OpenTofu code.
Marcin Wyszynski, Co-founder & Chief R&D Officer, Spacelift, said: “Vibe coding has transformed how software is built, yet infrastructure automation is still stuck back in time… With Intent, we asked, what if we could bring vibe coding to infrastructure provisioning, in a way that’s safe, governed and complementary to IaC? That’s what we’ve delivered with Spacelift Intent.”
Rob Strechay, Managing Director & Principal Analyst, theCUBE Research, added: “By having two happy paths to deployment for workloads of different criticality, this becomes a force multiplier… This has the potential to change the narrative.”
Spacelift Intent is available as open source or as an early access commercial offering integrated with the Spacelift Infrastructure Orchestration Platform for policy and security controls. A webinar on October 16 will demonstrate how Intent accelerates prototyping alongside Terraform and GitOps while maintaining full governance.
