Tech Mahindra is developing a sovereign Large Language Model (LLM) with 1 trillion parameters as part of the IndiaAI Mission, a government-backed initiative to build foundational AI models within India. The effort places Tech Mahindra among a select group of eight entities, including Fractal Analytics and BharatGen – an IIT Bombay Consortium – chosen to advance India’s open and self-reliant AI ecosystem. IIT Bombay’s proposed model is also expected to reach 1 trillion parameters.
In AI terminology, parameters are the internal variables that enable models to learn language patterns and relationships from vast datasets. A model of this scale ranks among the largest AI systems currently under development globally.
Mohit Joshi, CEO and MD of Tech Mahindra, said, “We are honoured to have been recognised by the Government of India as the key player for the prestigious IndiaAI Mission. This aligns with the government’s objectives to bolster leadership in AI… As a part of the mission, we are partnering to develop an indigenous sovereign large language model with 1 trillion parameters, which is a significant technical milestone. He added that the initiative “aligns seamlessly with the commitment to unlock transformation, drive productivity, and accelerate innovation.”
The sovereign LLM initiative under the IndiaAI Mission represents a strategic move towards an open-source-compatible AI infrastructure that enhances transparency, security, and data sovereignty, fostering collaborative innovation across academia, industry, and government.
