OpenAtom OpenHarmony is moving beyond consumer devices to power tunnels, power grids, hospitals, mines, and satellites, showing how a production-grade open source OS is becoming the digital backbone of China’s critical infrastructure.
OpenAtom OpenHarmony, a new-generation open-source operating system independently developed in China, is rapidly evolving into a national-scale digital foundation for intelligent transformation across industries. Moving well beyond consumer devices, OpenHarmony is now deployed across industrial systems, public services, healthcare, education, energy, transportation, and aerospace, positioning open source at the core of mission-critical infrastructure.
Since being officially open-sourced in 2020, OpenHarmony’s codebase has expanded from 7 million to 130 million lines, with nearly 10,000 contributors supporting a fast-growing, multi-sector ecosystem spanning finance, education, health care, industry, and transportation. The platform is accelerating real-world deployments while strengthening China’s basic software capabilities.
In transportation infrastructure, OpenHarmony powers a smart tunnel system at the Chengde branch of Hebei Expressway Group Limited, enabling real-time monitoring of electromechanical systems and faster accident response. “Based on OpenHarmony, we have developed the ‘JiHong’ smart tunnel solution, which has significantly enhanced the linkage capability of electromechanical systems, improved accident response efficiency, and strengthened tunnel traffic safety,” said Zhang Xiaolei, Director of the Electromechanical Management Center.
In energy operations, China Southern Power Grid has adopted OpenHarmony to build an IoT operating system that allows regional maintenance to be managed through a single mobile device. The platform is also driving productivity gains in mining, supporting smart wards in more than 20 hospitals, enabling wearable-connected education systems, and powering satellite operating systems such as the Dalian-1 Lianli.
