Open Assessment Technologies has released TAO Community Edition, a free, open source digital assessment platform designed for institutions and developers seeking full control, transparency, and community-driven evolution.
Open Assessment Technologies has officially launched TAO Community Edition (TAO CE), a free, open source digital assessment platform designed to empower institutions and developers with long-term control over their assessment infrastructure.
Distributed under the AGPLv3 license, TAO CE is built to evolve through shared community contribution rather than closed, vendor-managed roadmaps. The newly established TAO Community Forum serves as the primary space for collaboration, technical discussion, and governance, allowing contributors to directly shape the platform’s development.
“Open digital assessment depends on shared ownership and transparent decision-making. The TAO Community Forum creates a space where contributors can participate directly in how the platform evolves, rather than adapting to decisions made elsewhere,” said Patrick Pilchart, Open Source Ambassador at Open Assessment Technologies.
TAO CE is ideal for institutions, including public bodies, that need to operate digital assessment systems as long-term public infrastructure. Organisations can host the platform locally, comply with national data governance rules, and adapt functionality to policy or curriculum requirements, ensuring continuity beyond procurement cycles.
The platform’s modular architecture includes TAO Advance for assessment delivery, TAO Grader for scoring workflows, TAO Insights for analytics and reporting, and TAO Portal for system administration. Built on open standards such as QTI®, LTI®, and WCAG, TAO CE guarantees interoperability, accessibility, and auditability. Its multilingual interface supports over 18 languages, enabling global deployment and promoting equity and inclusion in education systems.
TAO Community Edition is available now as a free global download, with open participation in the TAO Community Forum for institutions, developers, and assessment professionals seeking a sustainable, transparent, and flexible alternative to proprietary platforms.
