UP Assembly to Hold AI session for lawmakers Aug 10

In a first-ever AI workshop of its kind, UP legislators to explore AI tools for lawmaking, research, and public engagement

In a first for any state legislature in India, the Uttar Pradesh Assembly is set to host a workshop on artificial intelligence (AI) for its lawmakers on August 10. The two-hour session will be held inside the Assembly complex a day before the monsoon session begins.

Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana confirmed that the initiative is designed to familiarise elected representatives with AI tools that can assist in legislative responsibilities—from policy analysis and legal research to public opinion tracking and speech preparation.
“This initiative will help our legislators harness the power of artificial intelligence in their everyday legislative duties,” Mahana said. “From searching past speeches to analysing policy, AI can bring a transformative shift to how we work.”

The session will be conducted by experts from IIT Kanpur, with hands-on demonstrations on how AI can be applied to legislative procedures. Mahana added that the Assembly’s mobile application will soon be integrated with AI features, enabling MLAs to access past debates, documents, and video clips through intelligent search and tagging functions.

“The backup for the proceedings of the house will also be connected to AI backup and this will help the members in finding excerpts on any issue from their own speech or from the proceedings. The members will also be able to go through the important debates in the house,” he explained.

  • The training is voluntary and will serve both as an introduction and a practical orientation to using AI in the day-to-day work of lawmakers. Officials indicated that the session will lay the foundation for establishing dedicated AI support units to assist legislators and their staff with legal drafting, documentation, and comparative analysis of policies and laws across states and countries.
Among other capabilities, AI tools will be shown to:
Compare proposed legislation with existing laws nationwide and internationally
  • Assess the potential socio-economic impact of a law
  • Detect conflicts of interest in asset declarations
  • Analyse public sentiment through social media, petitions, and surveys

The training will also explore the ethical and legal boundaries of deploying AI in policymaking and law interpretation.
Another major focus is on digitising the Assembly’s archival content. Using AI, decades’ worth of records—legislative texts, debates, and reports—are being made searchable via a custom dashboard. Legislators will also be able to monitor the status and expenditures of government schemes in real time.
This initiative marks the Assembly’s second AI-powered upgrade this year, following the installation of AI-enabled security and documentation systems within the building.
