Panasonic Automotive Systems has joined the Open Invention Network to reinforce patent non-aggression around Linux for the next generation of software-defined vehicles.

Panasonic Automotive Systems Co., Ltd. (PAS) has joined the Open Invention Network (OIN), marking a significant commitment to patent non-aggression and strengthening the open source foundations of the automotive software stack. OIN, the world’s largest open source patent protection community, enables royalty-free, mutual cross-licensing for patents related to the Linux System, ensuring that its more than 4000 members do not assert patent rights over core Linux and adjacent OSS technologies.

PAS has long been an active contributor to the open source ecosystem, particularly through Automotive Grade Linux (AGL) and by leading the standardisation of VirtIO, a critical virtualisation technology for Software Defined Vehicles (SDVs). Its involvement has helped drive wider industry progress in automotive software and system interoperability.

By joining OIN, PAS reinforces its support for Linux and open source technologies while deepening its participation in global OSS communities. The move will enable broader use of OSS inside PAS’s in-vehicle platforms, accelerating the development of advanced automotive software required for the SDV era.

Keith Bergelt, CEO of Open Invention Network, said, “Advanced automotive technology and connectivity are propelling ongoing innovation within the automotive industry. These innovations make the automobiles more integrated, safe and secure. Open source is a key driver of these capabilities. As a global leader in advanced automotive technology, we are pleased that Panasonic Automotive Systems is committed to patent non-aggression in core Linux and adjacent open source technologies.”

PAS states that its OIN membership will help facilitate strong open-source development and support a more secure environment for next-generation automotive innovation. The company continues to operate globally as a Tier-1 supplier with a corporate vision of delivering “Joy in Motion.”
