PM Narendra Modi urged G20 leaders to adopt open source, human-centric AI frameworks to ensure fair access, prevent misuse, and accelerate global innovation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for a decisive global shift towards open-source, human-centric technology, urging G20 nations to move away from “merely finance-centric, national and exclusive” systems. Addressing the third session of the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, he said, “In my remarks, I called for promoting technology that is human-centric, global and open source instead of merely finance-centric, national and exclusive in nature.”

Modi stressed that India’s own technology ecosystem demonstrates the power of open frameworks, pointing to population-scale participation in digital payments, space technology, and artificial intelligence. He underscored that India’s AI strategy is built on equitable access, population-scale skilling, and responsible deployment.

Highlighting India’s domestic mission to democratise AI, the Prime Minister said, “India’s AI Mission is working towards ensuring that the benefits of AI reach every part of India, including every district and language.”

Calling for collective safeguards, Modi urged the creation of a global compact on AI, warning against the dangers of deepfakes and criminal misuse. “For these steps, we need to create a global compact on AI and also place strict restrictions on the usage of AI for deepfakes, crime and terror activities,” he said.
India will host the AI Impact Summit in February 2026, themed “Sarvajana Hitaya, Sarvajana Sukhaya or welfare for all, happiness for all.”

He also pressed the G20 to shift perspective from “jobs for today” to “capabilities for tomorrow,” calling for a global framework for talent mobility to boost innovation. “We hope that in the next few years, the G20 will develop a global framework for talent mobility. This will boost innovation and benefit the youth of our planet,” Modi added.
