Mitsubishi Electric Upgrades To Gold Membership With Linux Foundation, Strengthening Global Open Source Leadership

Mitsubishi Electric has upgraded to a Gold Member of the Linux Foundation.

Mitsubishi Electric Corporation has upgraded from Silver to Gold Member of the Linux Foundation, marking its evolution from a user to a significant open source contributor. The move strengthens collaboration with the global open source ecosystem and highlights the growing role of industrial adoption of open source technologies in Japan and worldwide.

Jim Zemlin, Executive Director, Linux Foundation, said: “We are thrilled to have Mitsubishi Electric upgrade to a gold membership with the Linux Foundation. Their established history in nearly every industry, from the edge to automotive solutions, security to manufacturing, underscores the importance of collaboration in software development. We are eager to continue working alongside Mitsubishi Electric on open source, both in the Japanese market and beyond.”

Mitsubishi Electric has released the Serendie™ Design System, a UI/UX framework launched in November 2024 to enable co-creation internally and externally. Earlier in 2025, the company established the Open Source & InnerSource Program Office (OSPO/ISPO) to promote open-source best practices and bridge internal silos.

Engineers have actively contributed to Linux Foundation projects such as PyTorch, with Masahiro Hiramori recognised as PyTorch Ambassador in 2025 and a Contributor Awards Nominee in both 2024 and 2025 for advancing AI at the edge.

Shingo Oidate, General Manager, OSPO/ISPO, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, stated: “Upgrading to a Gold Member reflects our firm belief in the importance of open source, and demonstrates our commitment not only as a user, but as an active contributor, expanding our ability to collaborate globally and deliver transformative value to society.”

Mitsubishi Electric will showcase its open source contributions at Open Source Summit Japan from December 8-10, 2025, discussing the dual-focused OSPO strategy in a traditional Japanese conglomerate.

With over 100 years of experience and revenue of 5,521.7 billion yen (U.S.$36.8 billion), Mitsubishi Electric continues to advance technology for societal enrichment under its philosophy “Changes for the Better.”
