Airoha Becomes First To Commercialise prplOS Silicon Across OpenWrt, RDK-B, And prplOS

Airoha has become the first silicon provider to take prplOS-based fiber broadband platforms from open-source development to mass commercial deployment, giving telcos faster integration, lower costs, and greater freedom from closed vendor stacks.

Airoha Technology, a MediaTek subsidiary, has achieved a world-first open-source telecom infrastructure milestone by becoming the first global silicon provider to successfully commercialise prplOS-based fiber broadband platforms after three years of co-development with Tier-1 operators.

The breakthrough positions Airoha as the first fiber broadband silicon company with proven commercial deployments across all three major open-source ecosystems—OpenWrt, RDK-B, and prplOS—marking a major shift from software-led open-source experimentation to mass-deployed, silicon-backed operator infrastructure.

By 2025, two chipset platforms had already reached mass deployment. In 2026, Airoha plans to extend prplOS support to four additional platforms, including three 10G-PON platforms and one GPON SoC platform.

The achievement required overcoming three major barriers: low-level LL API SoC compliance, carrier-grade interoperability testing, and alignment with the EU Cyber Resilience Act. The result is a sharply reduced open architecture integration cycle—from 18–24 months to 6–9 months—materially lowering total cost of ownership for fixed broadband operators.

More strategically, the expansion helps decouple the application ecosystem from closed vendor stacks, addressing a long-standing bottleneck caused by limited chipset investment in open-source broadband systems.

MH Shieh, Executive Vice President and Spokesperson, Airoha Technology, said the company’s goal is to maximise flexibility across OpenWrt, RDK-B, and prplOS to help customers accelerate time-to-market for new services.

The milestone has been validated through collaboration with SoftAtHome and Orange Jordan’s full prplOS home fiber deployment, reinforcing its broader industry impact.
