Open Source Backstage From Spotify To CNCF Becomes Global Standard For Platform Engineering As Community Power Drives Industry Adoption

Cloud Native Computing Foundation unveils a documentary tracing Backstage’s rise from Spotify to a global open source standard, highlighting how community-led innovation is reshaping platform engineering.

Backstage has emerged as a global open source standard for platform engineering, marking a significant shift in how internal developer platforms are built and scaled. Originally developed as an internal tool at Spotify, the project has evolved into a widely adopted open-source framework under the Cloud Native Computing Foundation, demonstrating how open source can shape industry-wide standards.

The CNCF has released a documentary, “Backstage: From Spreadsheet to Standard,” capturing this transformation and its broader ecosystem impact. The film highlights Backstage’s journey from solving internal fragmentation challenges to becoming a foundational technology for platform engineering.

As a leading open-source framework for internal developer portals (IDPs), Backstage enables a unified developer experience, reduces infrastructure complexity, accelerates onboarding, and supports safer, scalable operations across organisations.

Its rapid rise is reflected in CNCF’s project velocity rankings, where Backstage moved from eighth place among over 100 projects in 2020 to sixth among more than 230 projects by 2025, underscoring strong community-driven growth and adoption.

“Backstage, in a little over 5 years, has set the global open source standard for platform engineering, dramatically improving developer experience,” said Chris Aniszczyk, CTO, CNCF. “Its evolution from a Spotify internal tool to a CNCF project is a testament to how open source can cultivate a community over time to drive a de facto industry standard for open source platform engineering.”

“Witnessing Backstage’s evolution from a Spotify initiative to a worldwide standard has been incredibly gratifying,” said Tyson Singer, Head of Technology & Platforms at Spotify. “We are grateful to the CNCF and to our global community of contributors and maintainers. This film is a tribute to open source collaboration.”

The documentary also celebrates platform engineering teams, cloud-native practitioners, and contributors driving the project’s continued evolution, reinforcing open source as the foundation of modern platform engineering.
