OpenStack’s 33rd open source release sharpens workload migration, operator automation and heterogeneous infrastructure support, giving enterprises a stronger VMware alternative while drawing momentum from Europe’s sovereignty-led cloud push.
The OpenStack community has launched OpenStack 2026.1 (Gazpacho), its 33rd release, strengthening the open-source platform’s position as a production-grade alternative for enterprises accelerating migration from VMware-led environments. The update prioritises intelligent automation, seamless workload migration across zones and environments, and simplified cloud operations, while ensuring consistent deployment across heterogeneous infrastructure.
The release is particularly significant for organisations modernising private clouds, edge deployments and AI-driven infrastructure, with expanded hardware enablement and usability improvements across core services designed to reduce operator burden and improve day-to-day cloud management.
The strongest proof point remains the scale of its open collaboration model. During the six-month development cycle, around 500 contributors from 100 organisations delivered 9,000 code changes, while the OpenDev Zuul CI framework processed more than one million jobs, underscoring the maturity, reliability and production readiness of the ecosystem.
A major geopolitical and enterprise angle also emerges from the contributor mix: 40% of contributions came from Europe, directly linking the release to the region’s growing digital sovereignty and open infrastructure initiatives. This gives Gazpacho relevance beyond feature upgrades, positioning it as a strategic open-source infrastructure layer for enterprises seeking flexibility, transparency and reduced dependency on proprietary cloud stacks.
