What if companies could build autonomous driving systems without having to develop every part of the technology from scratch? TIER IV wants to fix that with Autoware 2.0. They teamed up with the Autoware Foundation and coders everywhere to launch this free, open project on November 2, 2026.
It handles both AI-powered driving and regular step-by-step rules. It introduces a flexible architecture, modular software integration and a ready-made Reference Design framework to help companies adapt autonomous driving technology across different vehicles, applications and operating conditions. As a leading contributor to Autoware, TIER IV aims to make it easier for businesses to adopt and commercialise these solutions.
Autoware 2.0 Moves Towards Commercial Adoption
An important part of this initiative is its collaboration with Arm, AWS and Red Hat. Arm will work on computing platforms for Autoware 2.0 through Arm Total Design, AWS will focus on cloud-based development and operations, while Red Hat will support its integration with AutoSD, its open-source automotive software project. TIER IV CEO Shinpei Kato believes that open-source software alone cannot transform the automotive industry and that collaboration across AI, computing, cloud infrastructure and automotive software is equally important.
Autoware Foundation president Muhammad Zain Khawaja also highlighted the role of the global developer community in making autonomous driving more accessible. The companies will present their initiatives at Automotive Software Strategies US 2026, scheduled for November 3-4 in San Jose, California. TIER IV North America president Christian John will also share the company’s plans for expanding the commercial adoption of Autoware 2.0.
The bigger question is whether this open-source collaboration can make autonomous driving easier to develop and bring to more vehicles.
