An open-source desktop CNC milling machine combines industrial-grade precision, modular hardware and accessible design to support prototyping, education and small-scale manufacturing.

InMachines has introduced Piccola, an open-source desktop CNC milling machine designed to bring precision machining to workshops, makerspaces, educational institutions and small manufacturing environments. The compact system is intended to machine metals, plastics, and other engineering materials while providing an affordable and customisable platform for prototyping and product development.

This machine is made of a sturdy steel frame, linear rails, ball screws, and high-speed spindles that ensure high accuracy milling in a desktop machine format. The machine has been designed to allow users to upgrade its hardware and adapt it to different machining processes. Documentation for the entire mechanical design, electronics, and software is made openly available.

The Piccola machine is capable of supporting CNC operation using commonly accepted design and manufacturing software that enables users to manufacture parts out of computer-aided design (CAD) drawings via computer-aided manufacturing (CAM). This machine is capable of accommodating all types of machining tools and materials.
