Renesas Electronics has joined the Autoware Foundation to bring open-source end-to-end AI software to its R-Car platforms for ADAS and autonomous driving applications.
Renesas Electronics has joined the Autoware Foundation at its highest membership tier, strengthening efforts to develop production-ready autonomous driving systems using open-source software. The collaboration will bring Autoware’s end-to-end AI technology to Renesas R-Car system-on-chip (SoC) platforms, providing automotive manufacturers and Tier 1 suppliers with pre-integrated and scalable solutions.
The partnership is designed to support a range of vehicle automation levels, starting with entry-level Level 2 advanced driver-assistance systems and scaling towards Level 2++ hands-free driving and fully driverless Level 4 robotaxis. Manufacturers will be able to retrain, tune and customise the AI stack for specific vehicles and applications.
A key aspect of the collaboration is the use of Autoware’s open-source end-to-end AI stack as a software option for Renesas customers using R-Car SoCs and the company’s RoX software platform. Instead of building an entire autonomous driving software stack internally or relying completely on proprietary solutions, OEMs and suppliers can build on an open technology foundation.
Autoware’s software is released under the Apache 2.0 licence, allowing organisations to use and commercialise the technology while modifying it for their own automotive applications. The open-source approach is intended to reduce integration complexity and provide manufacturers with greater flexibility when developing AI-driven ADAS and autonomous driving systems.
By joining the Autoware Foundation, Renesas is expanding its involvement in the open-source autonomous driving ecosystem. The collaboration combines automotive computing hardware with an openly developed AI software stack, aiming to provide a scalable path for developing systems ranging from driver assistance technologies to higher levels of vehicle autonomy.
