FreeDesktop SDK 26.08 updates the software stack used for Flatpak runtimes and container-based development while introducing bootstrap changes and removing unused Snap support.
The FreeDesktop SDK project has released FreeDesktop SDK 26.08, bringing updated software packages and several changes to its underlying runtime and build infrastructure. The SDK is used for Flatpak runtimes, container-based development and other software stacks built around the FreeDesktop ecosystem.
The release updates several components, including Flatpak 1.18.2, Linux kernel 7.2.2, Intel Media Driver 26.3.2, WirePlumber 0.5.16, CMake 4.4.3, Bubblewrap 0.12 and BuildStream2 2.28. It also includes Python updates and security patches for various packages.
One of the major changes affects the SDK’s bootstrap environment. The runtime-minimal.bst configuration no longer includes GNU Bash or GNU Coreutils, allowing alternative implementations of common userland tools to be used during bootstrapping. The previous GNU-based configuration is now available through runtime-gnu.bst, while alternatives such as BusyBox, Toybox or Rust Coreutils could be used without changing the SDK’s default behaviour.
FreeDesktop SDK 26.08 has also removed Snap support, with the project noting that the functionality was not being actively used. The support could be restored in the future if demand emerges.
The release additionally introduces an overhauled documentation system, providing updated resources for developers working with the SDK. With updated packages, greater flexibility in the bootstrap process and changes to unused features, FreeDesktop SDK 26.08 continues the development of the open-source software stack supporting Flatpak and related Linux development environments.
