Nextcloud and Ionos have unveiled Euro-Office, an open source OnlyOffice fork designed to give enterprises and public bodies a sovereign, auditable alternative to Microsoft Office with deeper integration and AI-led workflows.

Nextcloud and Ionos have launched Euro-Office, a new open-source fork of OnlyOffice, in a major push for European digital sovereignty and a credible alternative to Microsoft Office for enterprises and the public sector.

The first stable release is targeted for summer, with a technical preview already live on GitHub. Once production-ready, Euro-Office will replace Collabora inside Nextcloud and Ionos Nextcloud Workspace. “The product is intended for the entire market, from small businesses to the public sector,” said Achim Weiß, CEO of Ionos.

Rather than build from scratch, the partners forked OnlyOffice’s open-source components, citing a more modern architecture, stronger code base, and smoother browser performance than LibreOffice-derived alternatives. “Libre Office is 35 years old and no longer the most innovative and fluid,” said Frank Karlitschek, CEO of Nextcloud, adding, “You can also notice that in the browser.”

Addressing trust concerns linked to OnlyOffice’s Russian roots, the companies said they audited the code, rebuilt closed components, and ensured independent verifiability. “We can vouch for our version,” Karlitschek said, while Weiß added, “Anyone can check it themselves.”

Backed by XWiki, Soverin, OpenProject and the EuroStack initiative, the project aims to extend Europe’s sovereign open-source software ecosystem through transparency, interoperability, and community-led innovation.
