India has cemented its position as the world’s largest open-source contributor base, with GitHub’s 27 million-user milestone underscoring its growing influence in open-source AI and globally adopted developer technologies.

India’s rise as a global open-source force has gained fresh validation, with GitHub crossing 27 million developers in the country, making it the world’s fastest-growing developer hub and reinforcing its leadership in global open-source innovation.

The milestone is significant beyond scale. India is now the world’s largest open-source contributor base and the second-largest overall source of open-source contributions, behind only the United States. Its growing influence is especially visible in AI, where Indian developers have made more than 7.5 million contributions to open-source AI projects, making the country the second-largest contributor globally in this segment.

GitHub said more than two million developers joined from India in 2026 alone, accounting for one in seven new developers globally, the highest share from any country. “More than two million developers have joined GitHub from India so far in 2026, accounting for one in seven new developers globally — more than any other country. India is the world’s fastest-growing developer community, and it shows no signs of slowing,” the company said.

The momentum also reflects a strategic shift from contribution-led growth to product creation-led leadership. Indian-origin open-source technologies such as Hyperswitch, ERPNext, ToolJet, and Bruno now see global adoption, strengthening the “built in India, adopted globally” narrative.

Kyle Daigle, Chief Operating Officer, GitHub, said, “Behind India’s economic growth is a relentless community of devs.”
