Kimi WebBridge Pushes Open Source AI Into Full Browser Control

Moonshot AI has launched Kimi WebBridge, a local-first browser automation platform powered by its open-source Kimi models, as Chinese AI infrastructure begins challenging US proprietary systems in coding benchmarks and enterprise AI tooling.

Moonshot AI has launched Kimi WebBridge, a browser extension that allows AI agents to control Chrome and Edge locally using the company’s open-source Kimi model family, highlighting how Chinese open-source frontier AI is increasingly powering the next generation of browser agents and developer tools.

The platform uses a local-first architecture built on Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP), allowing browser sessions, authenticated pages and sensitive enterprise data to remain on the user’s machine instead of being routed through cloud infrastructure. AI agents can open webpages, click buttons, scroll, fill forms, extract information, take screenshots and automate repetitive browser workflows.

WebBridge supports multiple AI ecosystems including Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, Hermes and Kimi Code CLI, positioning the platform as an agent-agnostic browser automation layer rather than a closed ecosystem.

The underlying Kimi K2 model launched in 2025 as a 1-trillion-parameter open-source mixture-of-experts model that ranked first among open-source systems on LMSYS Arena. Its latest version, K2.6, released in April 2026, scored 58.6% on SWE-Bench Pro, surpassing GPT-5.4 at 57.7% and Claude Opus 4.6 at 53.4%.

Kimi’s growing influence became more visible during the Cursor controversy earlier this year, when developer Fynn allegedly identified a Kimi model powering Cursor Composer 2. Elon Musk later posted, “Yeah, it’s Kimi 2.5.”

Lee Robinson later acknowledged that “roughly 75% of the compute went into Cursor’s own training pipeline,” while Aman Sanger called the disclosure omission “a miss from the start.”
