The Linux Foundation’s Open Programmable Infrastructure Project has released OPI Abstraction v0.1.0, introducing vendor-neutral APIs and deployment blueprints to simplify DPU/IPU adoption while reducing vendor lock-in.
The Linux Foundation’s Open Programmable Infrastructure (OPI) Project has announced OPI Abstraction v0.1.0, its first coordinated open-source release, introducing a vendor-neutral, hardware-agnostic API layer to standardise DPU/IPU infrastructure and reduce reliance on proprietary software stacks.
Spanning 26 repositories, the release provides APIs, software bridges, tooling, Kubernetes integration, provisioning and observability components, allowing workloads, orchestrators and platforms to program compliant DPUs without hardware-specific code. OPI said the release addresses key adoption barriers, including proprietary SDK fragmentation, incompatible APIs, differing operational models, duplicated validation efforts and vendor lock-in.
The release also introduces OPI Blueprints, a framework for repeatable production deployments. Its first official Blueprint, Kubernetes Network Function Offload, was developed with F5/NGINX, Red Hat and other ecosystem partners, using Red Hat OpenShift for orchestration and F5 NGINX as the application delivery controller.
Alongside the release, OPI published its first white paper, Accelerating the AI Era: The Critical Role of Open Programmable Infrastructure (OPI) in Scaling DPU and IPU Ecosystems, highlighting applications across AI infrastructure, edge computing, private cloud, data centres, storage disaggregation, high-performance networking and zero-trust security.
“AI is driving a fundamental shift in how organizations think about the infrastructure layer,” said Arpit Joshipura, GM and SVP, Networking, Edge and IoT, Linux Foundation, adding that open APIs and repeatable deployment patterns are essential to making programmable infrastructure “more open, interoperable, and practical for real-world adoption.”
