Shopify joined the PyTorch Foundation at its highest tier, placing its global retail footprint directly into the seat of open-source AI infrastructure.
The PyTorch Foundation officially announced on 1 July 2026 that Shopify has joined as a Platinum Member, the highest tier of engagement within the foundation. Platinum membership grants Shopify space on the PyTorch Foundation Governing Board. This board is responsible for setting bylaws, mission and vision statements, technical vision, and defining the scope of foundation initiatives.
Shuying Sun, Engineering Manager of the Foundation Model team at Shopify, has been appointed to both the Governing Board and the Technical Advisory Council (TAC). Sun, who previously led the Machine Learning fundamental platform team at Microsoft Bing & AI, brings deep expertise in large-scale model training and inference optimisation. PyTorch serves as the central foundation for applied machine learning across Shopify’s entire commerce ecosystem, which powers millions of merchants across 175+ countries—including global brands like Meta, SKIMS, and Supreme.
The framework directly underpins critical features like product search, buyer recommendations, and fraud protection, and is heavily utilised in products like Sidekick, which is Shopify’s merchant-facing AI assistant, and the training of its dedicated commerce foundation models. By stepping up from a standard user to a Platinum steward, Shopify intends to directly invest engineering expertise upstream rather than simply building on top of the framework.
Mikhail Parakhin, Chief Technical Officer at Shopify and Mark Collier, Executive Director of the PyTorch Foundation, both highlighted that this integration ensures PyTorch is built to handle the massive, real-world infrastructure demands of agentic AI intersecting with live retail and commerce workloads. Beyond the core framework, the PyTorch Foundation stewards a broader portfolio of open-source ecosystem tools including DeepSpeed, Helion, Ray, Safetensors, and vLLM.
