An open-source wearable development platform combines a Nordic nRF54L15 wireless microcontroller, modular sensor expansion and raw data access to accelerate wearable prototyping and edge AI research.
SensWear is an open-source, modular wearable development platform built around the Nordic nRF54L15 wireless SoC for researchers, developers, and product designers developing custom wearable devices. Unlike many commercial wearables that provide only processed sensor outputs, the platform offers complete access to hardware designs, firmware, software, and raw sensor data, enabling experimentation across a variety of wearable form factors.
The platform uses a modular design that includes a primary processing board and different daughterboards which connect using an established interface. The primary board contains BLE, BHI360 six-axis IMU, power management hardware and memory, and the additional modules include functionalities like PPG, temperature detection, touch sensors, haptics, and LEDs. Users are also able to build their own sensor modules in order to augment the platform.
The SensWear platform is provided with SDKs and APIs for Python and TypeScript, as well as mobile applications for Android and iOS to be able to work with the raw sensor data, create prototypes and edge AI algorithms. It is available under the MIT licence, providing developers with the ability to examine, alter and redistribute the hardware and software.
The modular design enables different sensor modules to be used with the same computing platform, allowing it to be adapted for devices such as wristbands, rings, patches and others without changing the core platform. Thus, this platform makes it easier to customise the hardware and rapidly test various sensors to use them in healthcare, fitness, human-machine interaction, and research applications.
