An open-source hiring standard aims to improve interoperability between job seekers, employers and AI recruitment tools by enabling structured and portable application data.
A coalition of recruitment technology companies has introduced the Open Apply Standard (OAS), an open-source framework designed to address growing challenges in AI-driven recruitment. The initiative aims to establish a common format for exchanging job application data, enabling candidates, employers, and hiring platforms to interact more efficiently while reducing repetitive application processes. The framework is being developed through collaborative governance under the HR Open Standards Consortium.
The standard sets out a structured format for representing candidate profiles, job postings, skills, qualifications, and application forms. By providing a standard way to represent information, recruitment platforms and ATSs will be able to exchange information easily and avoid incompatibility problems that force candidates to provide the same information in many hiring platforms.
In addition, the standard facilitates the development of AI recruitment processes since application data becomes machine-readable and standardised. In this way, the use of this standard format enables AI systems to interpret candidate information more efficiently. At the same time, the standard allows employers to incorporate tools from different vendors into the recruitment process without using proprietary data formats.
The project has been made open-source in order to promote the involvement of recruitment technology vendors, employers, applicant tracking software developers, and the broader developer community in general. People will be able to analyse, enhance, and implement the specification in order to create interoperable recruitment systems while keeping the ability to be compatible with other HR standards.
By implementing the open standard for digital job applications, this project aims to make AI-assisted recruitment easier, as well as reduce fragmentation in hiring systems. The project demonstrates how open standards can optimise data exchange and create a more efficient recruitment process.
