An open-source toolkit enables developers to build real-time volumetric video streaming applications using standardised technologies for immersive communication and extended reality experiences.

Nokia has open-sourced VolStream, a reference implementation designed to make real-time volumetric video streaming more accessible to the developer community. The project provides software components and reference implementation that help developers build applications capable of capturing, transmitting, and rendering three-dimensional video using open standards. 

The solution is based on standards including Visual Volumetric Video-based Coding (V3C) and MPEG Immersive Video (MIV), ensuring efficient representation of volumetric video by leveraging current video coding techniques. Using existing standards reduces reliance on proprietary solutions.

The toolkit incorporates low-latency transport technologies to support real-time communication. It also includes software components for real-time volumetric video transmission.

Released as an open-source project, it allows developers to analyse, modify, and extend the code for their own applications. The project provides reusable reference code for developers.

According to Nokia, the reusable reference implementation is intended to support the development of interoperable volumetric video applications.
