Mesa 26.2.0 delivers major graphics and compute enhancements across Linux and SteamOS, expanding open-source GPU support with new Vulkan, OpenGL and OpenCL capabilities for multiple hardware vendors.
Mesa 26.2.0 has been released with a broad set of enhancements that strengthen the open-source graphics stack powering Linux and SteamOS. The release introduces major improvements across Vulkan, OpenGL and OpenCL implementations, bringing new capabilities to GPU drivers from NVIDIA, AMD, Intel and ARM ecosystems.
One of the biggest milestones is the addition of VK_EXT_mesh_shader support to the open-source NVIDIA NVK driver, marking another step forward for NVIDIA’s open-source Vulkan ecosystem. The release also brings OpenCL 3.1 support to Rusticl on Asahi, Iris, RadeonSI, LLVMpipe and Zink, expanding GPU compute support across multiple platforms.
AMD’s RADV Vulkan driver receives a wide range of new features, including Protected Memory support, VK_KHR_performance_query, VK_KHR_device_fault, VK_KHR_shader_abort and VK_EXT_descriptor_heap enabled by default. Intel’s ANV driver also gains further optimisations alongside new Vulkan capabilities such as VK_KHR_shader_fma and VK_GOOGLE_display_timing.
Support for G1-Ultra, G1-Premium and G1-Pro GPUs has been added to Panfrost and PanVK, while PanVK itself receives numerous new Vulkan extensions. The PVR driver also expands its Vulkan feature set with new presentation, display, swapchain and maintenance extensions. Additional improvements include VK_EXT_debug_marker in the Vulkan runtime and wider availability of VK_GOOGLE_display_timing across multiple drivers.
Developers recommend waiting for Mesa 26.2.1 before deploying the release in production, as the first point release is expected to include important bug fixes.
