SUSE–AWS Open Source Collaboration Expands Enterprise-Grade Packages For Amazon Linux

SUSE and AWS have teamed up to expand Amazon Linux with thousands of new enterprise-grade open source packages.

SUSE has announced a major collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to strengthen the cloud native and open source capabilities of Amazon Linux. The agreement introduces the new Supplementary Packages for Amazon Linux (SPAL) service, delivering thousands of additional enterprise-grade open source packages to customers relying on Amazon Linux for mission-critical operations.

Rick Spencer, GM of Business Critical Linux at SUSE, said: “We’re proud that the Amazon Linux team has chosen to leverage SUSE’s Linux expertise and secure toolchain to provide these packages to their users. This is a rewarding collaboration driving mutual success while also enabling us to extend our foundational commitment to security, reliability, and quality to a broader community of users.”

Amazon Linux 2023 (AL2023) now gains immediate access to SUSE-vetted packages built on the Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux (EPEL) repository. The components are tailored for enterprise environments, broadening functionality, customisation options, and support for modern workloads across cloud native architectures.

SUSE’s role spans secure package delivery, repackaging, and ongoing hardening, enabling developers to focus on innovation instead of maintaining and securing software dependencies. The offering also lowers Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and increases operational agility for organisations deploying complex open source stacks.

The expanded ecosystem benefits customers operating in regulated or stability-critical environments, simplifying compliance and reducing risk while reinforcing Amazon Linux as an open source-aligned, enterprise-ready platform.

SUSE remains a global leader in enterprise open source, trusted by the majority of the Fortune 500 across Linux, Kubernetes, Edge, and AI infrastructure. The announcement was made at re:Invent in Las Vegas on December 01, 2025.
