OpenAI plans to release GPT-5.2 on 9 December, responding to Google’s Gemini-3, as the open AI ecosystem accelerates model development and innovation.
OpenAI has reportedly raised a ‘code red’ internally, signalling urgent action to maintain its lead amid growing competition from Google and Anthropic. The move underscores the pressure in the open AI ecosystem for rapid iteration and performance improvements.
The company is expected to launch GPT-5.2 on 9 December, a direct response to Gemini 3, which has topped multiple AI benchmarks. While the release date may shift due to development challenges, server capacity constraints, or rival AI announcements, internal evaluations suggest GPT-5.2 could outperform Gemini 3.
Earlier in December 2025, OpenAI launched GPT-5.1, but the spotlight quickly shifted to Gemini 3. In response, OpenAI is focusing on improving the day-to-day experience of ChatGPT users, including enhanced personalisation, improved speed and reliability, and the ability to answer a broader range of questions.
Some initiatives are being deprioritised, including ads for ChatGPT, AI agents for health and shopping, and the personal assistant Pulse, as noted in an internal memo by CEO Sam Altman: “OpenAI would push back on some other initiatives, including bringing ads to ChatGPT, AI agents for health and shopping, and the personal assistant Pulse.”
Nick Turley, Head of ChatGPT, confirmed that ads are not yet being introduced.
The news comes amid OpenAI’s ongoing struggle to match competitors in image generation since the GPT-4o launch in March, while Google’s Nano Banana and Nano Banana Pro models now top benchmarks, offering features such as integrated Google Search and consistent text rendering.
The rapid development of GPT-5.2 highlights transparent benchmarking, community-driven progress, and accelerated open innovation across the AI ecosystem.
