Open Source AI Agent Infrastructure Race Intensifies As Anthropic Eyes $300 Million Stainless Acquisition

Anthropic is reportedly in talks to acquire AI developer tools startup Stainless, signalling rising competition around infrastructure powering both enterprise AI and open-source agent ecosystems such as OpenClaw.

Anthropic is reportedly in advanced talks to acquire developer tools startup Stainless for at least $300 million, in a move that underscores intensifying competition around AI infrastructure supporting both proprietary and open-source agent ecosystems.

The report, first published by The Information citing a person familiar with the matter, said Stainless develops software that helps developers access and integrate AI models more quickly.

Stainless already provides tooling to major AI firms including Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google, positioning the startup within a rapidly growing AI developer infrastructure market.

The company’s software can also be used by AI agents, an area witnessing increased demand amid the rise of agentic AI systems and open-source frameworks such as OpenClaw. The growing adoption of AI agents has elevated the strategic importance of tooling focused on interoperability, API accessibility, automation, and faster model deployment across both closed and open AI ecosystems.

The potential acquisition also reflects Anthropic’s broader push into enterprise and business-focused AI applications, an increasingly lucrative segment for major AI firms.

Separately, Bloomberg reported that Anthropic is targeting a $900 billion valuation in a new funding round, more than double its reported $380 billion valuation from February.
