Felix Kjellberg, better known as PewDiePie, has launched Odysseus, a free, open-source AI workspace designed to run entirely on users’ own hardware, positioning it as a self-hosted alternative to ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini.
Released on 31 May 2026, Odysseus eliminates subscription fees, telemetry and cloud data collection, keeping user data on local machines. The source code is available on GitHub, and users can run local AI models or optionally connect external services such as OpenAI and Claude.
Described as “local-first, privacy-first, and no telemetry. Just you and your models,” the platform reflects growing interest in self-hosted AI, local inference and user-controlled AI infrastructure. Its launch alongside another local AI runtime project, Conifer, further highlights the momentum behind privacy-focused AI alternatives.
“The more you share about yourself with AI, the better it becomes. The more you give it access, the better it works. But the more you do that, the more you’re handing over a huge piece of yourself to these giant tech companies,” said Felix Kjellberg, creator and founder of Odysseus.
Odysseus combines chat, autonomous AI agents, deep research, email assistance, persistent memory, model comparison tools and a productivity suite featuring document editing, notes, calendars and image galleries. Its Cookbook feature scans hardware and recommends compatible models from a catalogue of more than 270 options.
While early reviews have been mixed due to hardware requirements and installation challenges, Odysseus may prove significant for a different reason: PewDiePie’s audience of more than 100 million subscribers could bring open-source, self-hosted AI to a mainstream consumer audience for the first time.
