If Elon Musk wants Twitter to be a public forum, Frances Haugen, a Facebook leaker advised making its algorithm open source, according to her, Making Twitter a virtual town square “where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated” was something Musk has previously suggested.

Musk has been vocal about handing “power to the people,” one of the reasons he purchased Twitter. He added that he acquired it to foster conversation, which he feared had been lost, in a memo written soon after the $44 billion deal was finalised.

Twitter should be the “most accurate source of information about the world,” according to Musk. But he cut back on the amount of staff whose primary responsibility it was to handle content moderation in the weeks after the acquisition.

Previously serving as a product manager for Facebook’s civic integrity team, Haugen. In 2021, she came out and released a vast amount of internal records shedding light on judgements that, according to her testimony before Congress, had resulted in “more division, more harm, more lies, more threats, and more combat.”

Making Twitter a virtual town square “where things essential to the future of humanity are debated” was something Musk has previously suggested.
