Open Source Mesa/RADV And SteamOS Stack Power Valve Steam Machine As Vulkan 1.4 Certification Signals Near Launch

Valve’s Steam Machine has surfaced in the Khronos Vulkan database with an open-source Linux gaming stack built on Mesa/RADV, SteamOS and the Neptune kernel, marking a major milestone for Linux-native AAA gaming hardware.

Valve’s long-awaited Steam Machine has entered the final validation phase ahead of launch after appearing in the Khronos Vulkan 1.4 conformant products database on May 23, 2026, confirming the console is powered by a fully Linux-based open-source gaming stack.

Listed as “AMD Steam Machine,” the certification validates Vulkan CTS version 1.4.5.3 compatibility using AMD’s Navi 33 GPU, the open-source Mesa/RADV Vulkan driver, Valve’s Neptune Linux kernel branch and the SteamOS ecosystem. The submission was filed under the Software Freedom Conservancy organisation, which represents the X.Org open-source graphics infrastructure within Khronos.

The Linux kernel fingerprint, Linux 6.16.12-valve6-1-neptune-616, matches SteamOS Beta 3.85, indicating Valve used production-track software rather than an internal test build. Igor’s Lab described the combination of Navi 33, Mesa/RADV and Neptune Linux as “a carefully coordinated SteamOS stack rather than a driver assembled at the last minute.”

The listing also reveals an “AMD Custom CPU 1772,” reportedly a Zen 4-based custom chip. Valve previously claimed the Steam Machine would deliver six times the compute performance of the Steam Deck through a 28-compute-unit GPU at 110W TDP with 8GB GDDR6 VRAM.

However, Linux anti-cheat incompatibility remains a major limitation. More than 680 of 1,136 anti-cheat-protected Steam games reportedly remain unplayable on SteamOS, including Valorant, Call of Duty, Battlefield and EA Sports titles due to unsupported kernel-level anti-cheat systems.
