The newly launched OurSQL Foundation aims to unite MySQL users, developers, vendors, and ecosystem players under an independent open-source governance model focused on transparency, collaboration, and long-term community growth.
The OurSQL Foundation has officially launched as an independent non-profit organisation designed to support the future growth of MySQL as an open-source database through vendor-neutral governance, ecosystem collaboration, and shared community infrastructure.
Established as a 501(c)(6) organisation, the Foundation aims to bring together MySQL users, developers, consultants, vendors, and ecosystem participants under a transparent and merit-based governance model. The organisation stressed that it is independent from Oracle, although it plans to collaborate with the company where mutually beneficial.
The Foundation plans to support a range of open-source community initiatives, including a public bug database for shared issue tracking, transparency logs for security patches, portals for MySQL-related open-source projects and tools, collaborative events, and future education and certification programmes.
“This Foundation will provide a platform to promote and support MySQL as a database, fostering collaboration across everyone looking to contribute to the broad MySQL ecosystem,” said Vadim Tkachenko, Technology Fellow and Co-Founder at Percona.
He added: “By bringing the community together under the banner of an independent Foundation, we can demonstrate that MySQL has a valid and vibrant future ahead of it.”
The Foundation stated that its goal is to help MySQL compete on merit within the open-source ecosystem while supporting the next generation of developers and applications.
The founding board includes members from Percona, PlanetScale, PingCAP, Alibaba, VillageSQL, and independent MySQL experts, reflecting a broad cross-section of the global MySQL ecosystem.
