An open-source firmware platform based on Zephyr RTOS aims to bring transparent, customisable, and modular firmware to gaming mice, reducing reliance on proprietary software.
Keychron has announced Zephyr Gaming Mouse (ZGM), an open-source firmware platform designed specifically for gaming mice. Scheduled for release in the first quarter of 2027, the project is based on the Zephyr real-time operating system (RTOS) and is licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL) v3.0. It aims to provide users and developers with a transparent alternative to the closed-source firmware commonly used in gaming peripherals.
While regular gaming mouse firmware usually can’t be examined or modified, the ZGM platform enables developers to examine the source code, modify the behaviour of the firmware, and add new functionality to it. The system uses a modular approach, which means that there are separate drivers for sensors, buttons, scroll wheels, and lights, making it possible to support additional hardware without rewriting all the firmware stack.
ZGM firmware is intended to process the input with a very low latency for wired and wireless gaming mice. It is developed using Zephyr RTOS and takes advantage of a rich embedded software ecosystem, scalability and a wide range of microcontrollers.
The Keychron G6 HE gaming mouse will be the first hardware to ship with ZGM and is set to be released prior to the availability of ZGM itself. This mouse integrates the concept of open-source firmware with customisable hardware elements and therefore provides an ideal platform for evaluating and developing gaming peripheral functionality.
By extending the open-source philosophy from mechanical keyboards to gaming mice, ZGM aims to increase transparency, hardware flexibility and firmware longevity. The project demonstrates that open-source firmware can facilitate cooperation, hardware compatibility and user autonomy for gaming peripherals without relying on proprietary software.
