Frigate is an open-source network video recorder (NVR). It allows users to build a self-hosted security camera system without relying on cloud services or recurring subscription fees. Running entirely on local hardware, the platform records and analyses video streams from compatible IP cameras while keeping footage within the user’s network, offering greater privacy and control over surveillance data.
Unlike conventional NVR systems that depend mainly on motion detection, Frigate uses local AI object detection to differentiate between peoples, vehicles, animals, packages, and other objects. This is done to minimise false alerts that can trigger alerts and recording of irrelevant activities like moving trees or changes in lighting conditions. AI processing can be speeded up via suitable hardware that supports this process, thereby making it more effective and reducing CPU usage.
The Frigate system is compatible with various IP cameras that provide RTSP video streams and it is also integrated with smart home automation systems like Home Assistant via MQTT protocol. Users can create automations based on the object detections made by the system, access the low latency live streams from the camera feed and also use sensors to trigger notifications and smart home actions.
It can run on older desktop computers, mini PCs, and home servers, which makes it an easy option for repurposing existing hardware. Although it is suggested to use a dedicated AI accelerator for better performance, the software can run without it on powerful enough hardware. It is open source which enables users to explore the code, customise its configuration, and make contributions.
