An open-source firmware for the Roland TR-808 adds MIDI connectivity, expanded sequencing, and new pattern-editing functions while retaining the original machine behaviour.
SuperOS-808 is open-source firmware for the Roland TR-808 that runs on an AT90USB1286 microcontroller board with compatible pinouts. The firmware is compatible with the Michigan Synth Works VOX DEI alternative CPU and adds new functions while retaining the original firmware’s behaviour.
SuperOS-808 supports MIDI input and output, including drum notes, programme changes for selecting patterns, master-slave clock synchronisation, and a soft-thru function. The SuperOS-808 upgrade kit adds MIDI connectivity and a SysEx web editor for firmware updates, while the combined version includes emulation of the onboard CPU, allowing it to run both the original and upgraded firmware.
SuperOS-808 also includes enhancements for the inbuilt sequencer, increasing the number of sequence steps from 32 to 64 and the number of sections from two to four. Older patterns will continue to operate seamlessly because sections 3 and 4 have a default length of zero. The enhanced sequencer supports additional functionality such as per-step probability, per-step ratcheting, instrument loop length, polymeter, swing, play direction, live resizing, arpeggiator pattern creation, and pattern copying and pasting.
The firmware also extends the TR-808’s existing controls, with CLEAR button gestures providing access to additional tools and settings while retaining the original pattern rhythm controls.
SuperOS-808 can be downloaded free of charge, while the Michigan Synth Works VOX DEI CPU hardware can be purchased separately.
