Dell Technologies, HP Inc., Lenovo and NVIDIA have joined the Linux Vendor Firmware Service as Premier Members, strengthening funding for the vendor-neutral open-source firmware platform that secures Linux and AI systems.

The Linux Foundation has announced that Dell Technologies, HP Inc., Lenovo and NVIDIA have joined the Linux Vendor Firmware Service (LVFS) as Premier Members, reinforcing long-term funding and industry support for the vendor-neutral open-source firmware update infrastructure.

LVFS enables hardware and silicon vendors to distribute secure firmware and microcode updates through standard Linux update tools, helping eliminate fragmented vendor-specific update mechanisms. The expanded backing will support automated firmware updates across Linux desktops, enterprise fleets, AI systems, GPU clusters and workstations, improving security while reducing downtime.

The move also strengthens Linux as a preferred platform for enterprises, developers and hardware manufacturers. For AI deployments, automated firmware and microcode updates help minimise costly interruptions to GPU and accelerator workloads.

“The technologies organizations depend on every day are built on shared open infrastructure,” said Jim Zemlin, CEO of the Linux Foundation. “By supporting the Linux Vendor Firmware Service, these industry leaders are strengthening a critical part of the Linux ecosystem and ensuring users have a trusted, consistent way to keep systems secure and up to date as deployments continue to grow across enterprise and AI environments.”

LVFS integrates with widely used Linux tools including fwupd, fwupdmgr and GNOME Software, providing a consistent firmware update experience across distributions.

Richard Hughes, Project Leader of the Linux Vendor Firmware Service, said the addition of the four Premier sponsors has enabled the project to reach its funding target, ensuring LVFS remains financially sustainable for years to come.
