
SDT has joined Open Quantum Design as a manufacturing partner to help turn publicly available designs for ion-trap quantum computers into functional hardware.
South Korean quantum technology company SDT has joined Open Quantum Design (OQD), a Canadian non-profit developing open-source ion-trap quantum computing hardware. As part of the partnership, SDT will serve as OQD’s official manufacturing partner, supporting the development and production of hardware based on OQD’s publicly available designs.
OQD is developing an open-source quantum computer project in which hardware designs, control systems, and software are made publicly available. This includes designs for components such as vacuum systems, ion-trapping electrodes, laser systems and optical systems. The approach aims to make quantum computer development more accessible to universities, research institutes and companies.
As part of the partnership, SDT will manufacture components including vacuum chambers, ion-trap electrodes, optical systems, laser systems, and control electronics. The company will also contribute to software development for interfacing with the hardware. Its manufacturing role is intended to help turn OQD’s publicly available designs into functional quantum computing hardware.
SDT has also joined the preferred-supplier programme for LightFlow, a cloud-based design and fabrication platform for free-space optical systems. Through the programme, SDT plans to contribute to the production of optical components and ion-trap hardware for OQD’s quantum computers.
OQD intends to expand its open-source quantum computing ecosystem into regions including ASEAN and Latin America. SDT, meanwhile, plans to expand beyond component manufacturing by taking a larger role in quantum computer design and manufacturing.
