Fujitsu has released OpenQARP under the Apache 2.0 licence, giving researchers reusable quantum algorithm components for developing applications across different execution environments.

Fujitsu has released its Open Quantum Application Research Package (OpenQARP) as open-source software to simplify quantum application development. The package provides more than 100 software components, including Fujitsu-developed quantum algorithms, that can be combined to build applications rather than implementing algorithms from scratch. It supports Fujitsu’s large-scale quantum simulator and NVIDIA CUDA-Q for hybrid quantum-classical computing.

At its core, OpenQARP includes more than 70 composable building blocks covering functions such as state preparation, ansatz layers and the Quantum Fourier Transform. More than 20 ready-to-run algorithms are also provided, including Subspace-Search Variational Quantum Eigensolver for noisy intermediate-scale quantum systems and quantum phase estimation for fault-tolerant quantum computing. Fujitsu says this approach can significantly reduce implementation effort; an ADAPT-VQE process used in its quantum chemistry research was reduced from about 130 lines of Python code to fewer than 40 lines using the package.

The package also includes algorithms developed by Fujitsu for specific quantum computing workloads. These include a Unitary Pair Coupled Cluster Doubles algorithm that uses pre-computation on classical systems to reduce quantum circuit depth during initial-state preparation, and Density of States Quantum Phase Estimation, which aims to simplify complex input-state preparation while obtaining energy-spectrum information efficiently.

OpenQARP is designed to run across a range of computing environments. It can be installed on a standard Python-capable PC and can integrate with NVIDIA CUDA-Q as a backend through a source build for GPU-accelerated execution. It can also run on Fujitsu’s 40-qubit state-vector simulator, which uses 1,024 PRIMEHPC FX700 systems equipped with A64FX processors. Fujitsu says more than 80 organisations had already accessed this simulator through its Quantum Simulator Challenge, using the beta version of OpenQARP for quantum application research.

The first open-source release is v0.1.0 and is available under the Apache License 2.0, with the source code published on GitHub. Fujitsu plans to extend support to simulation environments based on its STAR quantum computing architecture and promote the package across industrial as well as research communities. By making reusable algorithms and development components openly available, the company aims to reduce the software effort involved in quantum application development and encourage broader experimentation.
