HandBrake 1.10 brings 10MB Discord presets
HandBrake has rolled out version 1.10 of its free, open source video converter for Windows, macOS, and Linux, introducing a “Social 10MB” export option designed with Discord users in mind. The update also delivers improved metadata handling, new encoder controls, Linux-specific fixes, and a long list of bug patches.
The new 10MB presets arrive in response to Discord’s upload limit for free accounts, reduced to 10MB last year. They are based on the existing Social 25MB settings but run ‘one resolution tier down’ with tighter bitrates and a slower encoder preset. The developers say these are ideal for short clips where smaller file size matters more than perfect picture quality.
Clips can be converted to fit 30-second, 1-minute, or 2-minute durations, but there is no 5-minute option due to the severe quality drop — roughly 150 kbps at 180p. As the team explains: “The slow x264 encoder preset helps squeeze a bit more quality out of these lower bit rates, making a small but noticeable improvement in edge artifacts, especially for complex objects surroundeed by flat areas, e.g., a plane in the sky.”
While the Discord-friendly presets are the headline change, HandBrake 1.10 also improves metadata passthrough so creation date, location data, and cover art are preserved in output files. Users are advised: “Before updating, please make sure there are no pending encodes in the Queue. Please also make note of any custom presets you have created, as they may not be compatible with newer versions.”
Other notable enhancements include:
- Option to select encoder colour range
- Ability to disable Dolby Vision and HDR10+ passthrough in CLI
- Framerate Shaper metrics improvements for high-resolution frames
- Correct setting of VCN encoder presets
- NVEnc CQ range expanded to 63
- Option to disable audio track names for passthrough and auto-naming
- Proper MP4 signalling for EAC3 + Atmos
- Option to disable subtitle track name passthrough
- Direct passthrough of SubRip/UTF-8 subtitles to MKV without SSA conversion
- Lower crash risk when burning bitmap subtitles
- Reduced excessive memory usage during in-depth scans
- Performance improvements for Windows on ARM
Linux users get targeted fixes, including resolution of a queue removal crash, proper Opus and Vorbis passthrough validation in WebM, and automatic hiding of presets for unavailable hardware encoders.
HandBrake’s last major release, version 1.9, added features such as lossless VP9 encoding and Intel’s Quick Sync hardware decoder. Version 1.10 builds on that foundation, focusing on practical sharing presets and stability.
The software is available from the official HandBrake website for all three platforms. On Ubuntu, the easiest route is via the official Flathub package, though updates can take a few days to appear. Users are advised to avoid the outdated Snap version, last updated in 2019, and to back up any custom presets before upgrading. Unofficial PPAs are also available for those seeking a DEB build.
Documentation has been updated to cover all of version 1.10’s new features alongside existing capabilities, and full technical notes are published on the project’s GitHub release page.
