SafeRx launched by Amala Medical College and DoctorAssist.AI

Amala Medical College and Research Centre has introduced SafeRx, an AI-powered platform developed in collaboration with Bengaluru-based healthtech firm DoctorAssist.AI, aimed at improving prescription accuracy and patient safety. The initiative marks a notable step toward integrating decision support systems into Indian medical practice.

SafeRx acts as a real-time clinical decision support system that guides physicians in making safer and faster prescription choices. Unlike conventional manual methods, which depend on a doctor’s memory and vigilance, SafeRx analyses a patient’s medical history, diagnoses, comorbidities, and ongoing medications to provide context-specific recommendations.

“The system facilitates context-sensitive prescription recommendations, drug-drug interaction warnings, and risks associated with antibiotic resistance, which is becoming a serious concern in medical circles,” said an official from Amala Medical College. The platform flags potential harmful drug interactions and alerts clinicians to risks arising from antibiotic misuse, addressing one of global healthcare’s most pressing challenges: antimicrobial resistance.

India’s widespread over-the-counter sale of painkillers, antibiotics, and antihistamines complicates treatment, as self-medication often leads to adverse drug reactions. SafeRx supports physicians by suggesting the right antibiotic based on lab results, diagnoses, and local antibiograms—guides showing regional bacterial resistance patterns—ensuring prescriptions are both accurate and safe.
The system also promises long-term benefits in medical education. By familiarising students and young doctors with AI-assisted prescription tools, institutions like Amala aim to standardise care delivery and promote adherence to international best practices. Early adoption at the hospital has shown increased efficiency and greater confidence in managing complex cases involving multiple medications and comorbidities.

“Initial users in Amala have not only soared efficiency, but also elevated confidence in challenging situations that demand management of complex cases whose different comorbidities and medications interact,” the spokesperson added.
By combining AI with pharmacology, SafeRx provides a practical solution to prescription errors, enhances patient safety, and equips the next generation of physicians to use technology responsibly in clinical decision-making.
